Saying yes to everything is the fastest way to ship nothing well. A deliberate list of things you are not doing now is one of the most useful strategy tools we know.
Focus is a feature
Every idea has a cost beyond its build time: design, support, maintenance and the opportunity to do something better. A visible “not now” list makes those trade-offs honest.
How to build one
- Capture every idea, then tie each to a customer problem.
- Rank by impact and confidence, not by who asked loudest.
- Revisit the list every quarter and promote items deliberately.
Communicating the answer
A clear “not now, and here is why” builds more trust with stakeholders than a vague “maybe later”. It shows the idea was heard and weighed.
