Zero downtime is less about clever tooling and more about disciplined habits. These are the practices that keep our releases uneventful.
Separate deploy from release
Deploying code and exposing it to users are different decisions. Feature flags let you ship dark, test in production with a small audience and roll back without redeploying.
Make databases boring
Use expand-and-contract migrations: add new structures first, migrate data, switch reads and writes, then remove the old structure in a later release. Never ship a change that cannot run alongside the previous version.
Automate the safety net
- Run health checks before shifting any traffic.
- Use canary releases to catch regressions on a small slice.
- Keep a one-command rollback that is rehearsed regularly.
When these habits are routine, releasing becomes the least stressful part of the week.
